It wvas found in most of the cases that the deer cross the roads in search of drinking water and monkeys go out of the forests in search of food, usually from agncultural fields or habitations nearby. This issue is more pronounced during the summers This has been largely due to the non- availability of a drinking source vithin the forests It was felt prudent that provision of a dnnking source within the forests wvould be a more lasting soluuon than providing safe passages for animal crossings. Also, the effecuveness and utlitv of such crossings in minimizing collsion xvith vehicles is not very encouraging * Minimization of movement: To minimize the movement of the monkeys along the corridor, planung fruit species that provide fruits at different seasons of the year are suggested at various locauons (specified in Table 3.5;3). The species to be planted can include: Musa paradisiaca, Mangifera indica. Carica paptya, Psidium gualava. Citrullus vulgaris. The selecuon of the species to be planted as to be finahzed during the implementation in consultauon with the local forest officials. * Prevention of access / control of grazing within forests: To prevent the animals in the forest coming onto rhe roads and to protect the forest from grazing cattle, a thick vegetative barrier of Parkansonia aculata and Acacia lactronomis is planned To discourage cattle from grazing the roadside vegetaton, the species suggested for avenue plantauons within the Reserve Forests stretches shall be non-palatable * Provision of water sources within the forests: The exisung source of wyater in some forest areas such as Mundanal forests is the percolauon ponds dug by the forest department. These are rain fed and do not serve the purpose during summers ohen it is most needed. Therefore, instead of percolauon ponds it is suggested to have small ponds of size lm x 10m x 0 3m with cement concrete sealing (to prevent percolation losses). The shallow tanks will not submerge the animal in case it falls into the tank.
