Brief Descrjition of Subprolect I The proposed subproject aims at providinlg clean water suipply systems for some 3,600 inhabitants in 937 households in Hoa Mac district town. This subproject is expected to supply sufficient water for ! | domestic, commercial and industrial purposes of local community in adherence to national planning guidelines. Piped water shall be supplied round the clock with minimum pressure of 1 Om and be treated as per Clean Water Standard of the Ministry of Health given the supply source capacity in Hoa Mac of some I | 800mn3/day. The Subproject also encourages; installation of septic tanks with support from rotation funds with the aim to enhance sanitary condition and enhance awareness on community health. i * Capital cost is relatively high as the unit prices increase at district level because the facilities capacity is small and population density here is lower that that in urban areas. The river is rather large, with availability ancl quality ensuring for domestic water supply. However, during rainy and flood seasons, the concentration of suspended matters is relatively high, not favorable for raw water collection, conduction as well as treatment. + Nhue river: oiiginates from Lien Mac gate in Flanoi, stretching 74km long and merges into Day river in PlLi Ly. T he river also has a brancih connected to Chau Giang, flowing across Hoa Mac. Rive bed is some 35-40m wide. + Chau Giang river links with Red River via Chau Giang gate. + Duy Tien chaninel or called Hoa Mac river: is a small river, some 50m wide and 21m long, flowing across Hoa Mac district towin. This river is connected with Nhue river at Cau Gie (Gie bridge), and another branch linking to Chau Giang arid Nhue river at Phu Ly provincial town. Consultants has carried out survey and sampling and analysis of Hoa Mac river water. Analysis results reveal that Hoa Mac river water is seriously polluted due to its close association to Nhue river, which bears direct influences of urban, industr-ial wastewater from Hanoi, Ha Dong arid traditional handicraft villages along the river. Flow direction of Hoa Mac river depends on operation regime of Chau Giang gate, lying some 4 km away and linking to Red river. Hoa Mac river has turbidity of 25 NTU, NH4' value is 1.1mg/l with reported organic pollutants froml urban and industrial areas. The Phenol content reaches 0.0064mg/I. Aloni( the tow sides, numerous sanitation work of local residents are reported. I Table 1.1 below and Appendix I (Table 1 and 2) present the analysis results of groundwater and river water samples in Hoa Mac district town. * - Rainwater is not entirely clean as flowing down from roofs and storing in unclean containers. Excluding first rainy days, later falling amount is however considered to be clean. - As the results, in addition to rainwater used by households, the subproject has selected groun-idwater at depth 80m for centralized siupply because of good quality arid sufficient quantity. Brief Descrirtion of Subproiect I The proposed subproject is to provide clean vvater supply systems for some 3,600 inhabitants in 937 households in Hoa Mac district town. At Frozen Factory in Dong Van district town, there are tWD treatment facilities with 04 number 25m dJeep, lOOmm dia drilled wells with design capacity of 20 m3/h each. Currently, the Factory only run 3 1-2 wells. Treatment process includes aeration by spraying, rapid filtration and secondary pumping. Drainage and sanitation status Most population in Hoa Mac district lives along traffic road, thus a drainage network here is almost absent. Rainwater, domestic wash wastewater gravity flows and drains to river, gardens and nearby fields. I Following sanitation works present in Hoa Mac district town: I - 31% of population has toilets with septic tank, - 16 % has latrines with composting, - 1 3% has latrine of open pit type, - 17% has flush toilet, * - 20% has latrine, and 1 - 3% has no toilet. 1.2.3. Selection of Water Suppl\ Source Survey results by design Consultants (BVI vp VIWASE) show that: Groundwater: I + Holocene aquifer presenting in Dong Van district town comprises of fine and medium sand, lalluvial clay with depth ranging from 1 0-40m, averaging 1 7m. Static water is subject to seasonal | fluctuation fi-om 1.05-1 .4m. Some test drilling show that exploitation capacity may reach 25m31h. * F'leistocene aquifer present at depth 45 - 50m. In Dong Van area, the depth of this aquifer is 28.5m with relatively high conductivity. Static water table is recorded at 1.4-2.5m, subject to seasonal fluctuation. Tested flow may reach 34.7litter/s, Concentration of NH4' is 6,25mg/I, Fe?- I | = 11,9mg/I, Cl- = 954mg/I. The deeper the layer, the higher the senility level. In the area of Frozen Factory, capacity of exploitatino well is 20m3'h, iron content reaching 26 mg/I (table 1.1). | The Holocene aquifer is 0 - 25m deep, averaging 8 - I5lm. Static water table is 2 - 3m. 1I Surfacewater Surfacewater source near Dong Van is Nhue river. Nlhue river serves as the drainage river for Hanoi, Ha Tay and Ha Nam region. Nhue river bear the influences by direct urban and industrial wastewater from Hanoi, Ha Dong and traditional handicraft villages along the river. Therefore, Nhue river water is seriously polluted.. Design Consultants has surveyed and taken water samples from Nhue river. Analysis results show that water is dirty, with signal of organic pollution from urban and agricultural sector. The Phenol content reaches 0.008 mg/I. Analysis results by Center for Environmental Engineering of Town and Industrial areas (CEETIA) show that in [)ong Van, BOD5 content in Nhue river is 10 - 25 mg/I, COD 15- 40 mg/i. Groundwater and Nhue river water in Dong Van is presented in Table 1.1 and Appendix I (and Table 3,4,5) - Rainwater is not entirely clean as flowing down from roofs and storing in unclean containers. Selection of water source The results of survey by the designing consultants (BVI and VIWASE) show: | " Groundwater source: The Holocene aquifer in Vinh Tru area occurs at the depth of 0 - 35m, in a fine sand layer with an I average thickness of 17m, a static water level of 2 - 3 ni below the surface. In general the water sources is of low potential, commonly for extracting the groundwater from this aquifer, the |households use small diameter UNICEF drilled wells with hanid pumps, which can extract up to 1 - 2m3/h. The results of analyzing the water samples from a 8 m deep drilled well at the district People's Committee and some other UNICEF wells show that the iron, manganese and ammonium contents are relatively high. The total iron content is up to 7.2 mg/l, Manganese 0.5 mg/l and the ammonium content is 1.26 rng/l. Besides the Holocene aquifer, in Vinh Tru area occurs also a Pleistocene aquifer with the depth of 45-70m below the surface, with the thickness of aquifer of 15 - 30m. Transmissibility coefficient is I 700 - 900 m2/day. However, this aquifer has been salinated. The salinity increases with depth. At 60m deep drilled well, the content of Cl- = 939 mg/I. Static water level is 2 - 3 m, dynamic water level changes from 5 - 15m depending on place. Surface water source: At the Vinh Tru town there is only Chau Giang river. This is the main water source which may be used to supply water for Vinh Tru town. The quality of groundwater and water of Chau Giang river in Vinh Tru is described in Table 1.1 and appendix 1 (Tables 6, 7, 8).
